Jon W. Gurka graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, where he was a member of the Eta Kappa Nu, International Honor Society for Electrical Engineers. During his undergraduate studies, he was employed by United Technologies Corporation, Otis Elevator division, as a project engineer responsible for elevator control system design. From 1990 to 1993, Mr. Gurka was an Information Management Consultant with Andersen Consulting, now Accenture, working in software application development. While with Andersen Consulting, he was a senior team leader responsible for developing and testing application software for numerous manufacturing and aerospace clients.
Mr. Gurka received his Juris Doctorate magna cum laude in 1996 from the University of Illinois College of Law. He received the Rickert award for excellence in Oral Advocacy, and was a member of the Moot Court Bench and National Moot Court Team. He is a member of the State Bar of California and is licensed to practice in all federal district courts in California and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Mr. Gurka is also licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Mr. Gurka has an extensive federal and state court litigation practice having handled cases involving patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, unfair competition and breach of contract matters. He has participated in all phases of the firm’s litigation practice, including the pretrial, trial and appellate stages of litigation, and he has experience in obtaining and defending preliminary injunctions. He has worked on a diverse range of matters involving semiconductor manufacturing, computer hardware and software systems, microprocessor control systems, medical devices, telecommunications devices, hi-fidelity stereo products, and leadership consulting.
Currently, Mr. Gurka is a member of the Board of Directors for the Federal Bar Association, Orange County chapter. He is also a member of the Federal Circuit, American Bar and Orange County Bar Associations, and the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
