Paul Stellman

Paul Stellman’s practice focuses on all aspects of IP strategy and counseling, including patent prosecution, conducting and defending due diligence investigations, counseling on infringement and licensing issues, preparing IP-related agreements, conducting freedom-to-operate investigations, performing IP audits, and supporting patent litigation.

Paul works with startups to build their patent portfolios and position them for a successful exit.  He works closely with startup founders and engineers, from filing the client’s first foundational patent application to developing a coherent plan for expanding their portfolio.  Paul helps startup clients to understand the competitive IP landscape and continually works to prepare them for due diligence investigations by investors or acquirers.

In addition to serving smaller clients, Paul also has extensive experience helping large public companies manage and grow sizable patent portfolios.  He frequently works on complex patent issues and helps larger clients orient their portfolios in a strategic manner.

Paul serves clients across a wide range of technology areas, including medical devices (e.g., heart pumps, catheter systems, dental devices, orthopedic implants, biosensor modules), semiconductor processing techniques, electronic devices (e.g., sensors, MEMS devices, integrated circuit packages, IoT systems), construction and mining systems, and software (e.g., telecommunications systems, distributed computing).

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Stellman worked as a research assistant and National Science Foundation Fellow in the 3D Optics Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, focusing on the design of optical devices and nanomanufacturing methods.

Mr. Stellman joined the firm in 2011 and became a partner in 2018.
